Property Location: The Priest's House in Romania is situated in the delightful village of Colun, by the Olt River. Close to the House, there is a pond where you can swim or go fishing. You can also walk over the hills into the forest.
The village is mentioned under the name of Colonia in a 1322 document related to the close by Carta Cistercian Monastery, and drawn in detail under the name of Kolunn, on the Josephine maps of the 1770s, maps kept now in the Austrian State Archives.
Colun is 40km from Sibiu, the capital of the Sibiu County, nominated one of the two Cultural Capitals of Europe in 2007, a charming historical town with medieval fortification walls, palaces, houses and arcaded streets, museums, restaurants and cafes, shopping centers and supermarkets, market with vegetables and local dairy products, boutiques.
Distance from town: The closest town is Avrig, 17km: there is a beautiful fortified church, the former summer palace of the Governor of Transylvania, under refurbishment, you can visit the gardens, local market and shops and supermarket. The closest gas station is in Bradu village, 22km away.
Area activities: An excellent touring base for exploring the historic and picturesque Transylvanian countryside with the famous medieval cities of Sibiu 40km away. Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu is one of the finest museums of Romania; there are permanent and temporary exhibitions of paintings in the former Governor of Transylvania Palace. Only 10km away towards Brasov, there is Carta Monastery, a place founded by the Cistercian monks in the first decade of 1200.
If you want to see Transylvania from the highest Romanian mountains, you just need to drive 43km to Balea Lac passing the most impressive Balea Cascada (Balea Waterfall); on a clear day you can see the waterfall from the house’s back garden.
Style of property: The Priest's House in Romania is a 1800 village cottage, lovingly refurbished to provide modern comfort, full of character and charm, painted in traditional colours, with exposed beams and a stone fireplace. There are three bedrooms to accommodate six guests.
Furnishings and decorations: Traditionally and comfortably furnished, with attractive old photos on the walls.
Outlook and views: Magnificent panoramic views over a beautiful pond to the surrounding mountains.
Principle rooms: Three bedrooms with double or twin beds: The Red Room with ensuite bathroom: washbasin, shower, toilet on the main floor, in the attic, two bedrooms with one bathroom: washbasin, shower, toilet. Lounge with kitchenette and dining area. In the summer the dining area is organized in the courtyard under a portico, next to the garden.
Outside area: Courtyard paved with stone slabs from the village quarry, sun terrace, a pleasant shadowed portico with armchairs, table and chairs. Beyond there is a well kept garden with flowers, trees and a meadow. A lovely quiet place, where during morning coffee, bird watching may interest you, if you are not distracted by the butterflies and dragonflies roaming the buddleia.
