River Cottage in Ireland is in an idyllic position at the entrance to the beautiful Donegal village of Culdaff. This area is renowned for its fabulous golden beaches and its music and craic in the local pubs. Culdaff is an ideal place to get away from it all while still having everything you need on your doorstep.
Culdaff attracts surfers and canoeists because of its safe swimming and good waves. Recently it has also attracted a family of bottle nosed dolphins who can often be seen scouting for fish in the waters where the estuary meets the sea. This part of the beach is also a hive of activity for fishermen from far and wide.
The estuary is home to a wide variety of birds and the elegant heron can often be sighted from River Cottage as they wade though the river looking for their next meal! For more patient nature-lovers there are also rare sightings of shy otters and badgers as well as birds of prey.
The world-renowned Ballyliffen links golf course which is part owned by Nick Faldo, is about 10km drive away.
Culdaff is on the Inishowen Peninsula, this can be accessed most easily by car. City of Derry Airport is only a few km from the walled city of Derry/Londonderry, which is rich in culture dating back beyond the Siege of Derry in 1688 - a beautiful ornamental boat made of gold was found near here and dated back 3000 years - the Broighter Gold. Derry has also recently been short listed for the title of City of Culture 2013, so it is well worth a visit!
River Cottage in Culdaff, County Donegal, Ireland is a fabulous, 200 year old property that was originally two tiny fishermen’s cottages. This four bedroom property is able to accommodate up to eight guests. It has recently been completely refurbished and now provides modern comfortable accommodation.
Accommodation: Downstairs there is an open plan kitchen/living area with fabulous views over the river and a log burning stove. If you watch for a few minutes you can actually see the fish jumping for flies! The living area has plenty of seating and a sofa bed for any unexpected guests. The downstairs bathroom has a beautiful modern shower/bath unit with Italian fittings. There is a downstairs master ensuite bedroom, two single upstairs bedrooms and a large den bedroom, which has sofa bed accommodation for up to four more guests.
Outside there is a large garden, which borders the river and a small sit on top canoe, wet suits and body boards for water enthusiasts. When the tide is in you can actually canoe from the cottage down to the sea. The living area of the cottage opens out onto a lovely deck which has views down the river, an ideal place to sit and relax, barbeque etc. There is also a paved patio area which is shared with the cottage next door.
Well behaved pets are welcome at River Cottage, there are outbuildings which are ideal for housing larger dogs at night.
