Monte Gordo Bay boasts an unbroken stretch of sand stretching over a distance of 15km from the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve in the west to the River Guadiana on the Spanish border in the east. The beach is at the end of the road, and the nearby beaches in the villages of Altura, Praia Verde, and Manta Rota are also popular.
The historic towns of Tavira and Castro Marim are only a short distance away, and the local capital of Vila Real de Santo Antonio with its marina and ferry to Spain is just a few minutes drive. To the north of Monte Gordo are salt pans and another nature reserve stretching to the Guadiana river called Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim, a haven for many wading birds as well heron, flamingos and storks.
