Nenuphar is located in Marseillan, France, a town situated on the inland shore of the Etang de Thau between Bezieres and Montpellier. It has a lot of southern character and offers many amenities including a theatre, post office, banks, hardware stores, restaurants and a hotel, a variety of shops, an excellent weekly market, large supermarkets and the port. In the portside area is the co-operative winery and many restaurants.
There are over 100 kms of wonderful golden beaches along the Mediterranean coast near Marseillan to explore. Nearby Cap d’Agde offers spectacular coastline walking along rocky cliffs and also has a marine archaeology museum showing everything they have and continue to dredge up from the sea and the Herault river. There is also a Roman villa in the locality, and a museum of pre-history and dinosaurs on the actual site where numerous dinosaur eggs have been found.
The Canal du Midi which runs from the Atlantic ocean to the Mediterranean and is navigable by pleasure boats passes by Agen, Lot-et-Garonne and ultimately opens into the Etang near Marseillan is a world heritage site. It is worth visiting to see locks in operation and cycling on the canal paths or taking a boat trip.
Nénuphar in Marseillan, France is a fantastic two storey townhouse in the centre of the old town, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms to accommodate five guests.
The house is surprisingly large and has many interesting old historic features. The back wall of the house is 800 years old, being part of the old city wall. The house has been completely remodelled inside to enable the construction of a mezzanine at the top of the house creating a third floor opening onto a roof terrace with a stunning view of the tiled roofs and church.
On the ground floor, the front door and sliding garage door open into a large interior space currently used as a laundry area with washing machine, sink and garage. The stairwell at the back gives access to the upper floors. Guests can securely park their car inside, in the summer months parking is at a premium.
On the first floor are three bedrooms, two double rooms and one with a large single bed. One bathroom has a wc and a bath/shower, the other a wc and a large shower. There is a lounge area with an extra double sofa bed if needed. The controls for the air-conditioning/heating system are on this floor, ensuring that the bedrooms are cool and comfortable in the hottest part of the summer. There is also a music system with radio, cd and tapes. One of the bathrooms has tadelakt walls and this lime finish is also used elsewhere in the bedrooms.
The second level is where all of our guests spend most of their time. The exposed stone curved back wall sets off the wide space housing the kitchen, the dining area and the living room with French windows opening onto the roof terrace. The terrace has a table and chairs for six, a barbecue and a fountain. The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric vitro-ceramic hob top, microwave and a dishwasher. The living room has a wood stove for winter use and a television.
