PROPERTY DETAILS
The nearest village for supplies is Néré about 5 kms. Both the doctor and dentist are there as well as the supermarket, butcher, charcuterie, chemist, bank , post office and boulangérie; though if you don’t want to stir out of the garden, farm vans come round with different produce most days of the week..; fresh ducks, cheeses, oysters and two bakery vans with a selection of croissants, bread and patisséries..They announce their arrival with a piercing honk. Otherwise there are markets – a trip out in themselves. Aulnay,Chef – Boutonne,Matha, St Jean d’Angély, Brioux all within half an hour.
Without moving far from home you can explore what must be practically the smallest – and certainly one of the oldest Romanesque churches in the area. It’ cool and peaceful inside… a refuge from the heat.
The area is ideal for gentle cycling and picnics. The village is just on the edge of the forest of Aulnay and part of France’s conservation area.
Further afield – though mostly under an hour depending on traffic is Jarnac ( a pretty waterfront town and birthplace of François Mitterand), Angoulème, Saintes, Cognac (for obvious reasons!)Poitiers for Futuroscope and of course the sea at La Rochelle, Royan and Fouras. Nearer swimming – open air pools at Aulnay, Ruffec and a new very flash indoor pool with slides and Jacuzzis at St Jean. D’Angély. Most have slightly erratic opening hours due to school use and seasonal changes. Near Matha at Thors is a man-made lake with sand, grassed play areas, café / restaurant and pedalos and a bigger version near Melle which also has a little train… good for kids of all ages.
The house itself is a ‘fermette’- an old-fashioned small farmhouse (over 100 years old ) designed to be run by one family. When bought it had been somewhat neglected, the old lady who farmed it having finally retired at about 80 to live with her daughter.
The house has been beautifully renovated ,retaining much of the original stonework, huge exposed beams and open fireplace. It is on two floors; There are three large bedrooms upstairs - two double and one 'small double', we can put an extra bed in one of the doubles. One of the large doubles has en-suite facilities, shower, basin , wc and the other large double,a bath and downstairs a sitting-room, bathroom with shower, washing machine, washbasin and toilet, and a large fully equipped kitchen which opens out through French windows onto a terracotta tiled eating area and beyond into a large enclosed garden. In the pigeonnier there is garden furniture and a barbecue.
Separate to the garden, in a walled area is a 9.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 metre swimming pool.
Immediately after leaving the Autoroute (A10) at St Jean d’Angély (exit 34) turn left at roundabout signposted Angouleme. Follow this main ring road (D939). After the 4th roundabout, turn left to Aulnay (D950) --approx 13 km. At the end of the Aulnay Square turn right following the signs to Néré (D133). Take the left turning at the T junction in the centre of Néré,following signs to Ruffec and Romazières (D130). In Romazières turn right at the village square, then right again past the church and we’re about 100 yards on your right. Take the driveway up through the garden.
